Scottish golfing legend Sam Torrance OBE has joined the Farmfoods European Senior Masters field, and will be competing at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club in the inaugural tournament between 19-22 October 2017.
Torrance is a 21-time European Tour winner and has a significant history with the Midlands region, as it was his winning putt at The Belfry in 1985, that ended 28 years of American dominance of the Ryder Cup. Fast-forward to 2002, and Torrance captained Europe to a sensational Ryder Cup victory in 2002 at the very same Belfry venue, fellow Senior Tour pro Paul McGinley sinking the victorious shot.
Torrance said: “I am delighted to be playing in the inaugural Farmfoods European Senior Masters.
“I have very fond memories of playing in the Midlands with my history with the Ryder Cup and I will look forward to catching up with some old friends at the Forest of Arden.
“The field is extremely strong with the likes of Woosie and Paul McGinley playing, it will certainly be a competitive test!”
He joins 2014 Ryder Cup captain McGinley and 2017 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Ian Woosnam OBE, along with tournament host Peter Baker with an impressive field of European Senior Tour pros soon to be announced.
Hosted by 1993 Ryder Cup star Peter Baker, the Farmfoods European Senior Masters looks certain to attract the biggest and best players from the European Senior Tour, to what’ll serve as the penultimate event on this year’s schedule. It is the first tournament of its kind in the Midlands for a decade, and the Forest of Arden should provide a testing challenge for all professionals, with the winner rewarded with an impressive €50,000, as part of the total €200,000 prize fund.
As the last European Senior Tour event till the season-ending MCB Tour Championship, Mauritius in December, the Farmfoods European Senior Masters will be make-or-break for a lot of the professionals on Tour, deciding who will make it to Mauritius.
David MacLaren, head of the European Senior Tour, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Sam Torrance OBE to the Forest of Arden.
“His achievements over the years have been incredible and it’ll be great to see him reunited with Paul McGinley, in particular, after their 2002 Ryder Cup success.”
Event organisers, leading brand agency Champions (UK) plc, will be bringing the experience of successfully organising the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship at Nailcote Hall for the past ten years to the Forest of Arden.
Champions Managing Director Matthew Hayes said: “Sam is a great addition to the Farmfoods European Senior Masters field. His arrival confirms the prestige of the tournament and adds to the exceptionally strong line-up that’ll be battling it out at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club for that €50,000 prize.”
